Fathers' Presence in Delivery Rooms

ROBERT A. BRADLEY M.D.

The deliberate inclusion of the father in the delivery room as an essential member of the birth team is reviewed in the light of newer trends.

This has been based on the experience gained in eight years of private practice of obstetrics in a metropolitan area. The essential prerequisite of thorough prenatal emotional and physical training of the husband, as well as the wife, in their respective roles in achieving conscious spontaneous delivery is stressed.

It is demonstrated that such a policy is:

(1) an exhilarating experience for the parents, (2) an advantageous procedure for the hospital, and (3) a useful practice for the obstetrician.
