Body-image conflict following trauma and surgery
FRED O. HENKER III M.D.1
1 Professor of psychiatry/behavioral sciences at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
Problems of emotional conflict related to body image have become more common for two reasons: more patients are surviving mutilating injuries and diseases that would formerly have been fatal; and modern technologies make possible more drastic surgical procedures, with resulting body modifications that require personal adjustment. The author reviews his experience with hospital patients who required psychiatric help for body image-related problems and provides guidelines for therapy with such patients.
